Linux Needs Critics

Date: Fri, 3. April 2009 03:11:46
An anonymous reader writes "Keir Thomas berates the fact that the world of Linux almost entirely lacks critics. In fact, he says, Linux people tend to see genuine critical evaluation as a bad thing. FTA: 'The problem with this anti-criticism approach is that it's damning Linux to an eternity of navel gazing. Nothing can ever get any better. The best hope we have are the instances where a few bright sparks, with their heads screwed on the right way, get together and make something cool (as happened with, say, Firefox back in the day). But that's rare and can't be relied upon.'"pa href="http://linux.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/04/02/1317246amp;from=rss"img src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?from=rssamp;op=imageamp;style=h0amp;sid=09/04/02/1317246"/a/ppa href="http://linux.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/04/02/1317246amp;from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./p pa href="http://feedads.googleadservices.com/~at/fjSP3laichUbwpNmWEpgPK9Lbk4/a"img src="http://feedads.googleadservices.com/~at/fjSP3laichUbwpNmWEpgPK9Lbk4/i" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pimg src="http://feeds2.feedburner.com/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~4/i7AIhZHh8jc" height="1" width="1"/

According to Linus, Linux Is "Bloated"

Date: Tue, 22. September 2009 15:05:13
mjasay writes "Linus Torvalds, founder of the Linux kernel, made a somewhat surprising comment at LinuxCon in Portland, Ore., on Monday: 'Linux is bloated.' While the open-source community has long pointed the finger at Microsoft's Windows as bloated, it appears that with success has come added heft, heft that makes Linux 'huge and scary now,' according to Torvalds." TuxRadar provides a small capsule of his remarks as well, as does The Register.pa href="http://linux.slashdot.org/story/09/09/22/1239254/According-to-Linus-Linux-Is-Bloated?from=rss"img src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?from=rssamp;op=imageamp;style=h0amp;sid=09/09/22/1239254"/a/ppa href="http://linux.slashdot.org/story/09/09/22/1239254/According-to-Linus-Linux-Is-Bloated?from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./p pa href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/v95XQfzbNhooXMAp2jgL8f-X7WU/0/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/v95XQfzbNhooXMAp2jgL8f-X7WU/0/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/abr/ a href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/v95XQfzbNhooXMAp2jgL8f-X7WU/1/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/v95XQfzbNhooXMAp2jgL8f-X7WU/1/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~4/Id7hKmSp_zg" height="1" width="1"/

Intel Acquires Mobile Linux Developer OpenedHand

Date: Mon, 1. September 2008 03:05:57
nerdyH writes with the news that Intel has acquired OpenedHand, the developer of 'Poky Linux' and Matchbox. "The UK-based embedded Linux services team will join the Intel Open Source Technology Center, and will focus on Moblin development for mobile Internet devices and other mobile devices." The article notes that Intel's Moblin initiative had "failed to generate much interest" among developers when first announced earlier this year; this acquisition might help it catch the attention of more Linux developers.Read more of this story at Slashdot.

NYT Ponders the Future of Solaris In a Linux/Windows World

Date: Fri, 26. September 2008 15:05:24
JerkBoB links to a story at the New York Times about the future prospects of Sun's Solaris, excerpting: "Linux is enjoying growth, with a contingent of devotees too large to be called a cult following at this point. Solaris, meanwhile, has thrived as a longstanding, primary Unix platform geared to enterprises. But with Linux the object of all the buzz in the industry, can Sun's rival Solaris Unix OS hang on, or is it destined to be displaced by Linux altogether?"Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Android For Desktops? I Doubt It (PC World)

Date: Tue, 10. March 2009 21:53:00
PC World - For years, my friend Stephen J. Vaughan-Nichols has been trying to turn Linux into something it is not: A successful and popular desktop operating system. Everyone needs a reason to get up in the morning and I am glad he has found such a long lasting (and profitable) one. He is a smart guy, but I am still waiting for the Linux that will change my life.

Getting Past "Ready For the Desktop"

Date: Mon, 19. May 2008 03:04:08
Jeremy LaCroix suggests in an editorial at Linux.com that the phrase "ready for the desktop" is ready for retirement. As anyone who's been using Linux for several years (or even a few) for everyday tasks knows, "ready for the desktop" is in the eye of the beholder.Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Novell's Linux Business Takes a Seat At the Grown-Up Table

Date: Sat, 31. May 2008 03:04:17
CNet is reporting that while Novell still has a long way to go before they start making Red Hat nervous, they have at least gotten a seat at the grown-up table. Reporting 31% year-over-year growth in their Linux business, Novell attributes very little of this success to their Microsoft partnership, looking to their Redmond connection mainly for interoperability work. "Novell's core Linux business is growing. By 'core,' I mean that our non-Microsoft- related Linux business is growing. These are Suse Linux Enterprise Server subscriptions sold directly by the Novell sales force or by our channel partners, without any Microsoft certificates or Microsoft salespeople involved. However, the important thing is that our total revenue picture for Suse Linux Enterprise is growing, as our customers increasingly don't distinguish. As we've said before, Microsoft offers an alternate avenue for purchasing subscriptions but we are focused on growth of the whole category."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Date: Tue, 19. August 2008 20:00:41
Canonical, maker of the Ubuntu Linux Distribution, has joined the Linux Foundation. Canonical has advanced Linux on both the desktop and server and should be a good fit for the Linux Foundation, dedicated to accelerating the growth of Linux. Canonical supports several other open-source projects including Bazaar, Storm and Upstart, and by joining, it should be able to support and benefit from other Linux community members in the Linux Foundation, including IBM, Novell, Oracle, Intel, Red Hat and VMware. - Canonical, maintainer of the Ubuntu Linux distribution, has joined the Linux Foundation, the nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating the growth of Linux. By joining, Canonical can both contribute to and benefit from the foundation that features many of the Linux community's leading comp...

A Trip Down Distro Memory Lane

Date: Sun, 8. February 2009 15:05:54
M-Saunders writes "What did the Linux world look like back in 2000? TuxRadar has republished a distro roundup from Linux Format issue 1, May 2000. Many distros such as SUSE, Mandrake and Red Hat are still around in various incarnations, but a few such as Corel and Definite have fallen by the wayside."pa href="http://linux.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/02/07/181214amp;from=rss"img src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?from=rssamp;op=imageamp;style=h0amp;sid=09/02/07/181214"/a/ppa href="http://linux.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/02/07/181214amp;from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./p pa href="http://feedads.googleadservices.com/~at/yHFRfj_d1wsV4E9IIOmSrYH8VJA/a"img src="http://feedads.googleadservices.com/~at/yHFRfj_d1wsV4E9IIOmSrYH8VJA/i" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pimg src="http://feeds2.feedburner.com/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~4/r10IO0gBADU" height="1" width="1"/
