NVIDIA Releases New Video API For Linux

Date: Sat, 15. November 2008 15:04:53
Ashmash writes "Phoronix is reporting on a new Linux driver nVidia is about to release that brings PureVideo features to Linux. This video API will reportedly be in nVidia's 180 series driver for Linux, Solaris, and *BSD. PureVideo has been around for several nVidia product generations, but it's the first time they're bringing this feature to these non-Windows operating systems to provide an improved multimedia experience. This new API is named VDPAU, and is described as: 'The Video Decode and Presentation API for Unix (VDPAU) provides a complete solution for decoding, post-processing, compositing, and displaying compressed or uncompressed video streams. These video streams may be combined (composited) with bitmap content, to implement OSDs and other application user interfaces.'"pa href="http://linux.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/11/14/2230212amp;from=rss"img src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?from=rssamp;op=imageamp;style=h0amp;sid=08/11/14/2230212"/a/ppa href="http://linux.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/11/14/2230212amp;from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./p pa href="http://feedads.googleadservices.com/~a/rggGJQmBVN0De1vZ3l4zR2Kmeig/a"img src="http://feedads.googleadservices.com/~a/rggGJQmBVN0De1vZ3l4zR2Kmeig/i" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pimg src="http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~4/OB1zBrprSEk" height="1" width="1"/

Red Hat Set To Surpass Sun In Market Capitalization

Date: Fri, 23. January 2009 03:08:09
mytrip writes "In what may come to be seen as a deeply symbolic moment in the history of operating systems, Red Hat is on the verge of surpassing Sun Microsystems' market capitalization for the first time. Sun, perhaps unfairly, represents a fading Unix market. Red Hat, for its part, represents the rising Linux market. Given enough time for its open-source strategy to play out, Sun's market capitalization will likely recover and outpace Red Hat's."pa href="http://linux.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/01/22/1559226amp;from=rss"img src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?from=rssamp;op=imageamp;style=h0amp;sid=09/01/22/1559226"/a/ppa href="http://linux.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/01/22/1559226amp;from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./p pa href="http://feedads.googleadservices.com/~at/Wof0cTOM53EgtLdhdoRvm0Xw05E/a"img src="http://feedads.googleadservices.com/~at/Wof0cTOM53EgtLdhdoRvm0Xw05E/i" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pimg src="http://feeds2.feedburner.com/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~4/zzjRtsWcGWE" height="1" width="1"/

Manager Disables Web Server by Sneaking Away X-Box

Date: Tue, 27. May 2008 03:04:15
nz17 writes "While the administrator is away the managers will play. A custom Web server went missing at an unnamed public university, but who was the culprit? The department manager. Thinking that the Linux Web server (which used a Microsoft XBOX for its hardware) was a normal game console, he snuck the device out of the server room and home for his son to play over the holiday weekend. The philosophy students who used the server for their class were not amused."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Microsoft and Apache - What's the Angle?

Date: Sat, 2. August 2008 15:05:16
A week ago, we discussed Microsoft's contribution to the Apache Foundation. Now, Bruce Perens has written an analysis "exploring the new relationship of Microsoft and the Apache project, how it works as an anti-Linux move on Microsoft's part, and what some of the Open Sourcers are going to do about having Microsoft as a rather untrustworthy partner." In particular, he notes: "...Microsoft can still influence how things go from here on. If they have to live with open source, the Apache project is Microsoft's preferred direction. Apache doesn't use the dreaded GPL and its enforced sharing of source-code. Instead, the Apache license is practically a no-strings gift, with a weak provision against patent lawsuits as its most relevant term. Microsoft can take Apache software and embrace and enhance, providing their own versions of the project's software with engineered incompatibility and no available source, just as they forced incompatibility into the Web by installing IE with every Windows upgrade."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Saving Unix Heritage, One Kernel At a Time

Date: Fri, 12. June 2009 03:39:03
coondoggie writes "In this, its 40th year of operating system life, some Unix stalwarts are trying to resurrect its past. That is, they are taking on the unenviable and difficult job of restoring to their former glory old Unix software artifacts such as early Unix kernels, compilers and other important historical source code pieces. In a paper to be presented at next week's Usenix show, Warren Toomey of the Bond School of IT is expected to detail restoration work being done on four key Unix software artifacts all from the early 1970s mdash; Nsys, 1st edition Unix kernel, 1st and 2nd edition binaries and early C compilers. In his paper, Toomey states that while the history of Unix has been well-documented, there was a time when the actual artifacts of early Unix development were in danger of being lost forever."pa href="http://tech.slashdot.org/story/09/06/11/181223/Saving-Unix-Heritage-One-Kernel-At-a-Time?from=rss"img src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?from=rssamp;op=imageamp;style=h0amp;sid=09/06/11/181223"/a/ppa href="http://tech.slashdot.org/story/09/06/11/181223/Saving-Unix-Heritage-One-Kernel-At-a-Time?from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./p pa href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/K8ubLxGI6x8Gb_QhlOrIAAW4Lug/0/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/K8ubLxGI6x8Gb_QhlOrIAAW4Lug/0/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/abr/ a href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/K8ubLxGI6x8Gb_QhlOrIAAW4Lug/1/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/K8ubLxGI6x8Gb_QhlOrIAAW4Lug/1/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pimg src="http://feeds2.feedburner.com/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~4/CM5zv2Jk7H4" height="1" width="1"/
